Building technology installed for largest UPS distribution center in Europe

Apleona Wolfferts has been commissioned to provide heating, cooling, ventilation and fire safety for the latest expansion stage of parcel service provider United Parcel Service (UPS)’s freight and transshipment center at Cologne Bonn Airport. The largest UPS hub in Europe, built in 2005, is currently being expanded to include four 6,000 square meter multi-storey terminal buildings with a ceiling height of up to 10 meters and three seven-storey office towers. The project is scheduled for completion in August 2022.

As well as the HVAC systems, the Apleona subsidiary will also fit the new terminal buildings with smoke extraction systems. It will also install sanitary systems in the office towers and is responsible for execution and assembly planning and for coordinating all other technical building work. The major contract has been commissioned by the general contractor, the construction company Walter Hellmich GmbH. UPS is the developer.

Horst Kever, Managing Director of Apleona Wolfferts: “These kind of complex construction projects are challenging in terms of construction logistics on account of the tight schedule and the size of the buildings. The sensitive nature of the airport site also imposes further requirements due to explicit security regulations. This applies to the entire construction team and Apleona Wolfferts has a key role to play here in terms of coordination, which we will fulfill through professionalism, commitment and by delivering on time.”
